Covellite is a copper sulfide mineral known for its distinct blue metallic sheen, sometimes called "blue copper." The color results from the reflection of light from the mineral's crystal lattice structure. Covellite often occurs with other copper minerals, such as chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite.
One of the unique features of Covellite is the presence of gold-colored veins of pyrite that run through the blue metallic sheen. Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral that often occurs as a trace mineral in copper deposits. The combination of the blue covellite and the gold pyrite veins creates a striking contrast that adds to the aesthetic appeal of the mineral.
Covellite is found worldwide, including in the United States, Italy, Germany, and Russia. However, the most desirable pieces of Covellite come from the mines around Butte, Montana. Butte was once a booming mining town known for its rich copper, silver, and other mineral deposits. Today, Butte is still an essential center for copper mining, and it is home to several mines that produce high-quality Covellite specimens.
